subject Kitchen went up in smoke

My kitchen burned up Sunday. It seems as if the burner on the stove was either on but the light was out or it shorted; the kitchen went up while I was in the shower. A pan of oil was sitting on the burner and it must have ignited but I couldn't see or hear anything. I smelled it first but it was too late by then. It became so hot a it cracked the glass face on a clock on the opposite wall that then went flying and melted the coffee pot. As the doors and windows were closed there was no air to feed it but it was bad...the flames were at least eight feet high and the smoke was so black I couldn't see. The pan was fused to the burner and the metal stove hood melted...we're cleaning it up now as it left a black coating on everything and what looks like little black threads that turn to black greasy smudges if you touch them. It's all over the paperwork I had out too. Of the several close calls I had? This was one of the worst. Brian came home later and was checking out what burned and what didn't as it's a strange pattern...about the fifth time he said something did or did not burn I said:

The most valuable thing in the apartment - me - is unscathed.

He said, Yeah, you're right as if the Spongebob Squarepants dishtowel is irreplaceable, as if I had to convince him I was more valuable than Spongebob.

He bought a new mop; we are actually trying to mop the black off of the ceiling.

I am going to be busy trying to salvage what I can.

Susan.
